A green step towards a

              self-determined future

GREEN STEP is a non-profit association striving for sustained improvement of the living standards of the rural population in developing nations by means of implementing non-polluting technologies.

On the following pages we would like to inform you about the
association, our aims and activities, the project villages as well as applied technology and training.

In all our activites we are aiming for green (ecologically aware) steps towards a self-determined and responsible future. With ecological awareness we are aiming to help others to help themselves instead of invoking dependence.

Each organisation and each project in a developing nation invariably leaves traces ours, however, are meant to be green. Green in this context stands for
sustainability and ecological awareness.

Current situation in developing nations
Especially the rural population in developing nations is deprived in many aspects of life. 2 billion people do not have access to modern forms of energy, wood is used as fuel for cooking, cerosin lanterns illuminate huts or in case at least a little money is available diesel generators or batteries are used in order to generate electricity. Often people have to cover long distances in order to acquire wood or diesel.

Access to electricity reduces poverty
Electricity facilitates daily life, however. Childern may see to their homework in the evening, mobile phones may be charged, radio or television may be used in order to ensure access to news from the city and the rest of the world. Furthermore electrical agricultural equipment considerably facilitates work in the field. The time saved on acquiring wood or diesel due to the access to electricity may then be put into training and education.

Access to electricity invokes progress and therefore reduces poverty. National projects relating to the development of electricity supply are still in their very early stages in most of the developing nations, if available at all. Alternative solutions are therefore the only possibility to enable a decentralised supply of electricity, especially in rural areas.

Renewable Energy a chance for local craftsmen
In this area GREEN STEP adds sustainable value by offering local craftsmen
training/education in order to allow them to build their own small decentral plants (wind power plants, water power plants as well as the use of solar cells) using a very elementary technology. The plants are meant to be constructed locally using materials that are locally available. The participants will also be trained in entrepreneurship and thus learn how to develop their own business based on the applied technology. Consequently an additional source of income is generated, thereby ensuring a sustainable adoption of the applied technology.

Environmental problems and health hazards
Not only the provision of electricity proves complicated, though. Out of unawareness car batteries, electronic trash or other toxic waste is diposed of in the course of brooks and streams leading to a pollution of the drinking water. Fields are excessively fertilised or poised by the undue use of pesticides. Woods are cleared in order to provide fuel for cooking leading to soil erosion. Furthermore, the use of wood as fuel for cooking bears health hazards due to the smoke emission within the houses.

Ecological Awareness Training und sustainable agriculture
Further approaches in the project villages of GREEN STEP are
Ecological Awareness Training and imparting knowledge on sustainable agriculture, e.g. crop rotation or composting. The efficacy of using wood as fuel for coooking may be increased several times over by the utilization of enhanced stoves again these may be crafted locally.
